I lived without a bank account for a while when I got pummelled with about 8 overdraft charges at once. My wor offered a visa paycard as an alternative to a paycheck. It was manageable.

No, because its expensive to cash checks. When i didnt have a bank it was very hard.

I left BOA for Fidelity and never looked back. FDIC insured, no ATM fees anywhere/ever, and no bailout bull. I'm done with the big cheats.
